Law school can cost over $200,000 in student loan debt. The first year of law school is mind game. Legal practice is a crucible. Mental health issues like depression and anxiety affect lawyers much more than the general population. So before you decide to go off and become Elle Woods, stop and ask yourself: is law school worth it?
Before I made the commitment to go to law school, I did the work. I worked in the areas I was curious about. I conducted informational interviews with lawyers. I worked at a law firm, and saw what a lawyer’s day to day job looked like. I asked my supervising attorneys what they thought about law school, what they did right, and what they wished they had done differently.
Before committing, I took the time to answer this question for myself. Is law school worth it? For me it is because I want to be a lawyer.
This is truly the only good reason to go to law school. Do not go to law school because you want to go into advocacy, you do not need a law degree for that. Do not go to law school because medicine did not work out, and you want the prestige. Do not go to law school because you hit the ceiling at work, and do not know what else to do. Do not go to law school because your parents are making you. The only reason to go to law school is the reason I listed above: because you want to be a lawyer.
The only reason to go to law school is the reason I listed above: because you want to be a lawyer. Is law school worth it? Yes. But only if you go for the right reasons.
