Step by Step guide for the vaseline preshampoo treatment
After posting my extensive guide to all the wonderful uses for Vaseline, I got a few requests from people who wanted to know how to do a Vaseline hair treatment as part of a preshampoo regimen. Well here it is guys! In the above photo, I have included everything I use for wash day, and I hope you will try these out! They all contribute something a little different and help maximize the effect of this highly beneficial hair treatment. If you’d rather have someone else carry out the treatment on you, check out Beauty Booker hair treatments and book yourself in for an appointment.
I detangle my hair and begin with my scalp. Think of your hair like the crop or harvest, and your scalp as the soil! You can’t have great hair without a “fertile” and healthy scalp. This cleansing conditioner is made with Rosemary and peppermint to soothe a dry, itchy scalp and promote growth. Rosemary and peppermint are both said to help with dandruff. I find that applying the cleansing conditioner to my scalp during the preshampoo gives a good headstart, and ensures that my scalp is clean by the end of wash day!
I part my hair into about 8 sections to start and then clip them up separately. Using a squirt bottle, you can get these at Sally’s, I apply the Renpure cleansing conditioner to my scalp. I then massage my scalp for about ten minutes to make sure I cover my entire scalp.
Now for the fun part! I bust out my Vaseline and get ready to get my hands dirty. Taking each section individually, I apply the Vaseline to my ends very liberally. I smooth the Vaseline into my hair gently, and in a downward motion to smooth the hair cuticle.
I then massage my scalp again, but I am careful not to bring the length of my up to my scalp. This is because I do not want the Vaseline to get on my scalp to prevent build up. Massaging the scalp increases blood flow, and thus increases heat and this is very important for the absorption of the products used into my scalp and hair shaft.
Pop on Netflix, read a book, get comfortable! This is the part where you sit back and let the treatment do the work for you. Put on a shower cap to trap the heat from your scalp, and wait for 30 minutes.
After 30 minutes you can begin to wash. To wash my hair, because I need a clarifying wash to clean the Vaseline out of my hair, I wash with one of the only sulfate shampoos I still use: Suave Almond Butter Shampoo. I apply the shampoo and work it in on my ends before I add water to ensure clean, Vaseline free hair! I then follow the shampoo with my favorite moisturizing conditioner, Aussie’s 3 Minute Miracle. It really does just about live up to its name!

A dermatologist might be able to help you get the skin you’ve always dreamed of through procedures such as glycolic peels and laser treatments (click for more information about some of the amazing treatments out there).
Baby your eye area, it’s very fragile and one of the first places to show signs of aging. Use your ring and pinky finger when applying creams and makeup, NOT your pointer or middle finger. Why? Your ring and pinky fingers are weaker, and therefore give a gentler touch.
Cellulite? Coffee scrub the area. No joke. Post coming soon.
Pepto Bismol facial. Yes, I said Pepto Bismol. Read all about the benefits here.
Phillips makes the best primer for oily skin on the market. It’s called Milk of Magnesia. It can also be used as a facial! There’s an amazing post all about it on one of my favorite beauty blogs, Makeup and Beauty Blog. Find the post here.
Set eyeliner with an eyeshadow in the same color for all day wear. This is a lifesaver on my waterline. So for all those girls with smudged liner, you know who you are, check this out!
A highlighting eyeshadow above your lash line and in the inner corner of your eye will seriously open up those peepers!
Astringent is a must have, especially for those will oil skin. I use it at night to clean pores, and gently chemically exfoliate my skin. Here’s how to incorporate it into a routine.

Looking for a foundation? Swatch on your neck for an even match. I also like to swatch on the back of my hand. Where NOT to swatch? The inside of your wrist, it’s too pale. Save that for the perfume aisle!
When swatching foundation or concealer, let it set before you choose! Many foundations and concealers set a different color than they initially swatch.
Oil skin in overdrive during the warmer months? Swap your moisturizer out for aloe vera gel a few days a week. This gel stops oil production, but is highly moisturizing on its own.
Apply face cream and cleanser in an upward motion.

On special occasions apply your makeup way ahead of time, before you do your hair. This will let the makeup set for a more natural finish and give you time to make any adjustments for a polished, more put together look!
VITAMINS should be part of a well balanced diet! Your body allocates nutrients by a hierarchy. When it has more than enough nutrients for more important organs, like your brain, it will begin the allocate the left over nutrients for organs lower on the hierarchy like YOUR SKIN. Score.
Exfoliate your lips everyday before bed. This will ensure a moisturized, smooth surface for any butters/balms/glosses/or lipsticks you want to apply the next day.

No blotting sheets? Too expensive for your taste? Crepe paper (used for wrapping gifts) is the same exact thing.

My tried and true guide for how to grow hair faster!
After Christmas, I was looking through photos and noticed my hair hadn’t really grown much at all over the years. I was always having to cut off damaged ends, and it seemed my hair was always breaking off faster than I could grow it back. I got sick and tired of it! This was the turning point for me, and I finally decided to take my hair health seriously and grow healthier, longer hair.
I have to admit I am a results oriented type of girl. I need to be able to see the fruits of my labor in order to stay motivated! So I hit google and started doing serious research. My go to query? “How to grow hair faster.” Faster was the key word here. While I was very concerned with the health of my hair, I wanted to see results quickly enough to stay motivated but consistently gradual enough so that I could track them.
I researched things to avoid and things to do more of. I started weeding harsh chemicals out of my routine, and changing my diet for optimum hair health. I even looked into beneficial vitamins to include so I could really maximize results! I focused much of my attention in the beginning on hair growth, but I also made sure not to neglect the importance of length retention.
Drastic First Steps
Starting out, I have to admit that my hair was very damaged. I did a semi-big chop and it was heartbreaking. All things considered, it wasn’t as bad as it could have been because I hadn’t relaxed my hair for several months at this point and I had a good head start. I cut off my relaxed ends, and began to focus on my hair in its natural state. I also switched from braids to weaved extensions because this style is more versatile and would allow me better access to my hair.
I never intended to stay natural permanently! I just wanted to give my hair a break and allow it to get strong again before I relaxed again. This time around, I decided I was going to have a completely different relationship with hair relaxer. I kept my hair natural for about two months before attempting my first texlax. From then on, its been nothing but strong, healthy, growing hair and I am never turning back!
New Hair Rules
I was no longer going to relax every month. The most frequent I relax now is every other month, and the longest I have stretched is about 4 months.
I was no longer going to relax straight. I decided I was going to learn the art of the TEXLAX, perfect it, and implement it.
I would no longer go to salons for relaxer. I decided I would trust myself first and foremost with the care taking of my hair, and learn all the necessary skills required to do so.
I would avoid harsh chemicals at all costs, except for the occasional relaxer, and would do as my own hair whenever possible. No one baby’s your hair better than you can.
MOST IMPORTANTLY I would make sure the majority of my everyday hair products were all natural, and I would work to make essential oils the center of my hair regimen.
I would actively decrease the amount of heat I use on my hair, and include protective styling as my go to hairstyles.
I would change my diet for optimum hair health, and include supplements when needed.
I would prioritize health over style, and resist the urge to over burden my hair.
That’s it for my guide on how to grow hair faster. To be honest, these changes happened gradually, but now they are so ingrained they are like second nature! I am so happy with the progress I have made so far, and I cannot wait to keep going. I hope you enjoyed the first post of my healthy hair series and will continue to follow me on my journey to long healthy hair.
Drugstore Edition: The best hair products to restore dry or damaged hair
Best hair products that you can find at the drugstore!
Quality hair products are of the utmost importance! You will always want to get something like salon hair products, but often times you just don’t know what to get. But when you get staff who are willing to advice you on the best products for your hair, that is a bonus. I’ve been lucky so far, as the salons that I have visited before have all provided me with good results and positive staff. If it was up to me, for the people who didn’t provide good customer service at the salon, I would tell them it isn’t too much to ask to understand what customer service is, just by going to sites such as Salesforce. If you’re main business revolves around customer interaction, they should be your main priority. But these days, I buy drugstore products to use at home. Hopefully they will learn soon enough.
However, not only can they help maintain hair health, they are essential to preventing damage and can even be helpful for reversing some of the damage that has already been done. I have spent a long time researching the best shampoos, both by reading shampoo ratings and by trying them out myself. I relied on each and every one of the products shown, as well as others, during the beginning stages of my hair journey and I strongly recommend them to anyone just starting out! If you are looking for products that do good and smell great, why not visit a site like Grain & Gram for a wide range of these types of products.
Aussie 3 Minute Miracle
The Aussie 3 minute miracle is just that: a miracle in 3 minutes. This product is not only an excellent hydrating conditioner, but it also gives incredible slip! This makes it one of the best detanglers around. It smells amazing and is loaded with a slew of impressive and natural ingredients. I often leave this on for more than 3 minutes, but 3 minutes is definitely enough time to do the trick. I turn to this after a hard protein treatment or after a henna treatment to restore the necessary moisture balance to my hair. I purchased this product for the first time last winter and I have already gone through over 20 bottles! I always buy 3 at a time because I cannot stand to go without.
V05 Moisture Milks
I use these amazing cheapie conditioners regularly as part of my cowash regimen. My favorite one is the Shea Cashmere. It has an impressive list of ingredients, filled with a significant amount of oils, proteins, and vitamins! When I use this as a cowash, I always let it set for a few minutes before rinsing it out. I am left with soft, silky, stengthened hair every time and I cannot go without this product. It is an essential in any healthy hair regimen for its affordability and effectiveness.
Organix Intense Moisturizing Treatment
This product does exactly what it says: delivers intense moisture. That being said, I rarely use it alone! By paying attention to my hair, I found that it responds best to a healthy balance of hard protein and moisture, and this conditioner is central to achieving this balance! I beat one egg and add it to this moisturizing conditioner for a balanced protein treatment that both strengthens and hydrates.
Renpure Cleansing Conditioner
This cleansing conditioner has not only done wonders for my hair, but it has also done incredibly well to improve the condition of my scalp! The two most commonly overlooked areas of hair health are the scalp and the ends and this product covers them both. My flavor of choice: Rosemary Mint. This combination of stimulating and soothing ingredients helped eradicate my dandruff and promote growth. It take a while to get used to the fact that it doesn’t lather, but once you do you will not be able to do without!

Dove Nourishing Oil Care Shampoo & Conditioner
So, while I have given up using sulfates on my hair with any sort of regularity, sometimes you need a clarifying shampoo. This is one of my all time favorites for this very purpose! It has sulfates and is clarifying, able to cut through grease with ease. At the same time, the oils it is made of keep it from being overly drying! The conditioner is thick and give great shine, I like to use it as a cowash in between my cleansing conditioners during the week. If you want to see a detailed post all about cowashes, what they are, why I do them, and how to do it then comment and let me know!
Tresemme Moisture Rich Conditioner
This conditioner is hands down the best detangler ever! I have literally used this on every hair texture, and even on tangled hair extensions and it comes through each and every time. It has amazing slip, and is just the right amount of thickness to really coat every strand for maximum coverage. I mainly use this as a detangler, and for this reason it also makes a great cowash conditioner. I use this cowash after a light protein treatment to restore moisture to my hair and make for easy combing after applying the protein. I highly recommend this to anyone looking to significantly reduce breaking and shedding when handling wet hair. Protip: Hair is at its weakest when wet, so only comb through wet hair when you have a detangling conditioner applied! This will cut down on breakage and the split ends that come along with it!
Tresemme Heat Tamer Spray
This heat protectant is one the most popular out there, and for good reason. It works very well, and adds a beautiful shine without weighing hair down or making it look greasy. It has a nice light scent and seems to help with frizz as well, since I don’t use an antifrizz when I use this and it holds up very well. The only downside? You need to experiment to find the perfect amount for you. Too much and it leaves a sticky residue. What’s your favorite heat protectant?
Reduces breakage by strengthening hair!
Organix hair Oils
These hair oils are an absolute lifesaver! They are ultra lightweight and fast absorbing so that they do not weigh your hair down or make it greasy. I usually apply these oils, yes all of them, a drop or two each to my hair whenever it feels parched and after every wash and blow dry. I find that they work particularly well to moisturize my ends and prevent splitting. My favorites are the Keratin Oil, the Macadamia Oil, and the intense moisture Argan Oil. If you would like to see an in-depth post on these oils let me know! Wonderfully fragrant, they add a nice finishing touch to any hair style. Pro-tip: Never apply oil to wet hair! Oil and water don’t mix and this will prevent the oil from absorbing into the hair shaft leaving your hair greasy and weighed down. For best results, wait until your hair is completely dry before application!
Organix Biotin and Collagen Spray
Used with my Organix Keratin flat iron spray and my Tresemme heat protectant, this spray makes the perfect addition to my favorite pre-heat regimen. Used alone, it thickens my hair while strengthening and promoting elasticity. I purchased this product for the first time this spring and I am already due for a repurchase!
Organix Flat Iron Spray
The organix flat iron spray is the third and final ingredient in my makeshift proprietary blend/amalgamation heat protectant! Used alone it gives excellent weight shine that won’t get sticky no matter how much you use. It also really helps get your hair straight and eliminate frizz. Used as part of my mix it does all these things, and complements the other sprays very nicely. It has a like cocoa shea buttery smell and is dark in color.
Renpure Argan Oil Blow Out Creme
I bought this last winter, but only just started using it this summer, and I am certainly glad that I did. I apply this to my hair right after washing and towel drying and it works amazingly to both protect my hair and add shine. It gives bouncing body and it helps reduce frizz when applied to hair. It really does complement the blow drying process, making it easier and more efficient as well as giving the desired shine and body.
Neutrogena Triple Moisture Silk Touch Leave In
I use this a little differently than it was probably intended, as part of my prepoo (preshampoo) treatment. Along with my essential oils and some good old vaseline, this leave in adds incredible moisture and hydration to my hair before a clarifying shampoo and is a must have. Prepoo treatments are of the utmost importance because of the way they help protect the hair from the stresses of washing, and prevent overdrying that can result from the sulfates in shampoos that lather. It also helps to improve the shine, body, and softness of your hair even after you have finished washing your hair. I highly recommend you all try the prepoo and let me know how it works for you! Comment below if you would like to see a series of posts for different prepoo methods for different hair types and needs!
Aloe Vera Gel
What is aloe vera gel doing on the list? Well, this is an essential for me all year round! As part of my healthy hair journey, I have resolved to wear my hair down a lot less due to the stresses this can cause and the sock bun has become my best friend! To slick down flyaways and keep my hair looking sleek, without drying it out, I turn to aloe vera gel as a hair gel and hairspray alternative. Aloe vera gel gives a soft hold, no flaking, and simultaneously moisturizes the hair! For this reason, I always make sure to have plenty of it lying around.
Biotin 5000 mcg
Healthy hair comes from the inside out! This is one of the most overlooked pieces to a healthy hair journey. In addition to a healthy, well balanced diet and proper hydration, supplements can really help take your hair health to the next level! I have been using CVS Biotin for months now and the results are undeniable! I always have two or three bottles at a time so I never run out and take them religiously. If you are prone to breakouts, know that that is a somewhat commonly reported side effect of the Biotin supplement. I find that increasing my water intake while taking Biotin helps immensely. I also take this everyday a month at a time, followed by a month off , and alternative. This ensures that I do not build up a tolerance, and also gives my body a break! Protip: As with any supplement, be sure to check with your physician with any questions or concerns.
I hope you found all of this information helpful! I am super excited to started my healthy hair series, and I hope you will try all of these tips out for yourselves. Let me know what works for you, or if you have any questions about particular hair types. I will be more than happy to do the research and put a post up!
